I think that the AJA has had it's problems in the past. For example there used to be a 7 frame delay between the computers monitors and the output monitor with the I/O box. That may have been fixxed with the newest drivers I am not sure.

The I/O uses firewire, this is true as well. THe theory behind the I/O is that it will accept any 10-bit signal and push it down the firewire port. If I was doing this I would want to do it on a dedicated firewire port (one in which I am not using any other firewire devices) So I might add a dedicated firewire drive for the I/O whcih means I am taking up a slot anyway. Why didn't they use the firewire 800 port for the I/O. I think it's because they may not have been shipping any MAC's with firewire 800 at the time.

In my case, I am more comfortable with a breakout box and a dedicated capture card. I know a few studio's that have I/O's and I do not know their specific problems, but in my case the PipeStudio WORKS, which is a big deal for me because I use it in a professional studio set up.

I woudl read through the AJA i/o forum as a way of doing a bit of research.

David
