Jason,
I'll have to double check when I get abck to the office, but I'm pretty sure you need FCP 4 to do anything with realtime graphic files keyed on top of video. I've done it several times, and honestly I think it works with any graphic file with an alpha channel that quicktime can read (tiff, psd, tga, etc.) I'll check it as well, and perhaps aurora can chime in, but I think in FCP 4 you can do them on top of any aurora codec in realtime, uncompressed or mjpeg, for sure the uncompressed, but I'll check the mjpeg.
The main concern for you still though is that you're using FCP 3 and I'm 90% certain the RT graphcis layer was a new feature of FCP 4 only.
