Well the OS X has put a priority on security, and probably for good reasons. Unfortunately, it makes things a little harder for us sometimes. There are only two ways I know of doing connecting to drives and files outside of the shared folder. The official way is that you need to buy OS X server, which isn't a bad thing to do. The second non-recommended way, because of security, is to login from the other computers as an Admin user of the computer doing the sharing. This should give you access to all mounted drives.
