Thanks Curtis,
I read through the link. The first page was helpful, learning UNIX commands is beyond my interest at this point. I also read some other pages on os X and users and permissions and the like.

I understand now why I can trash and move the folders that have not been assigned a user if I am logged on as an admin and not just a user.

However, my system is not at all complex as to who owns what and where. Until today, I have only had one user account/name and that name had admin privileges. No other user names or users ever touched my system. I created a new admin account today but have never created or saved any file with it.

The only thing that is misplaced about my set up is that when I copied folders and files from other drives and computers (originally created in Mac OS before 10 and therefore without any ownership) I dumped them onto my hard drive icon rather than in my user folder.

The only question I have is whether dragging these folders into my user folder will make my user account their owner and whether doing so will do any harm.

My plan is to move only documents and leave any folders that were created by installers. The only way I can do this is to give my user account admin privileges again.

FWIW I also trashed com.Microsoft.explorer in my library/preferences folder. Since then I have not had any unexpected quits. Hopefully that will remain the case.
