Thank you all for your helpful suggestions. After 8 excruciating hours, OS X seems to be running fine on my computer. Here's what I did, in case anyone wants to know for a reference.
1. ran Disk Warrior, which allowed my computer to start and boot up semi-properly.
2. connected my computer to a co-worker's via FireWire; booted it up in Target Drive mode and copied the stuff I needed onto a co-worker's computer
3. disconnected my computer from co-worker's computer
4. installed OS X and in the process, reformatted my hard drive (eliminating the partitions as well as the content on them)
5. installed OS 9.2 (because there are a few apps I still need to run in OS 9.2)
6. installed necessary apps
This list makes it sound easier than it was because I have eliminated the NUMEROUS snafus I encountered while doing all this.
PS - In the original email I accidentally typed G3 but meant to type G4.
