OSX upgrade from 9.0.4 - How do you....?

I installed OS X onto my system. config is: G4 400, OS 9.0.4, 1 gig ram, 2 internal drives with 1 external firewire drive. I have apps in 9 that I was using to back up before updating my Final Cut Pro from version 1.2.5 to version 3. I cannot for the life of me get back to OSX. I went to control panels>Startup disk and what I have in there are icons of my 3 drives and an icon for "network disk".
Did I somehow load OSX in the wrong place? If so, what steps do I need to take in order to get this going correctly?
Also, if I have one app whose later upgrade only runs on OSX and I am in the OSX environment, would I need to install that older version (1.2.5) of Final Cut Pro before proceeding to install my new upgrade once I figure out how to get to OS X?
Thanks for the help !
