Making a 3d Stroke cycle through colors

NBC (as well as many other TV stations) seem to be using what appears to be 3d Stroke, or a very similar sort of effect quite a bit lately. The effect I see most often is as a lower thirds / wipe combination. The 3d strokes come in from the left, they show their little text (Like, "Stay tuned for The Apprentice", or whatever), and the strokes go back to the left.
That motion seems easy enough to duplicate, but one feature I can't figure out is how to makes the stroke colors cycle. Particular seems to have much better control of colors over the life cycle than 3d Stroke. Would that be a better candidate for achieving this color cycling effect?
Thanks,
Todd
