Here's a good rule. Charge your clients for work.
I've written several articles on the art of time budgeting. The thing to remember is your time is valuable. Your client knows it; you should appreciate it too.
Sometimes it's cheaper to pay someone a fee for a specialty job.
Example: It would take me 5 days to create a 3D train yard. I could buy one for $100. Sound expensive? No. It works out to about $20/day off my fee to my client (or $2.50/hr), and frees me up to work on other aspects of the project. I'd prefer to make more than $2.50/hr. ;)
Don't worry -
Particular
is easy enough that you'll be creating (and maybe posting) your own specialty effects soon enough. No doubt, you'll be comfortable using it after a day.
