I didn't study the clip ALL that closely, but I was under the impression that they just tracked all four corners of the counter (where the particles landed) and applied the Distort>Corner Pin effect to a solid and made it fit the counter's shape.

I think 4 pin tracking is available with Motion tracking in AE6 PRO.
