You can quickly and easily place a number of different objects randomly over the surface of NURBS geometry using particle instancing adn goals. Using goalUPP and goalVPP expressions you can randomly place the particles, and then instance either geometry or paint FX strokes to the particles and in a matter of minutes you have exactly what you would have in Max, but even better is if the surface deforms all the objects will deform along with the surface. I can elaborate more if necessary.
