Hurt anything? It wont hurt anything, unless you cant return it if it does not work.
With the problems you have had with this PC, I would REPLACE the old ram with the new first...just to see if you concerns are fixed. If not, then stick em back in with the new. I dont think additional RAM will solve your problems...but I have been wrong b4...
