Does the noise sound a bit like a car fan belt slipping?

If so it sounds like a dodgy fan. You will need to open the case and try to pinpoint the sound. It is most probably on one of the CPUs.

Replace the fan/cooler and it should run ok.

Once your system is running fine I recomend another fresh install. As you have discovered a "hot" CPU can corupt data.
