Using external DVD drives on G3

I am looking at purchasing an external DVD drive to replace a dead drive in one machine. i would also like to use this unit with an Apple G3. Is this possible?
I know G3s do not come with DVD drives - a G4 processor is required. However, the G3 has a 500Mhz processor, which meets the speed required by many manufacturers to record to DVD. Seems like it "should" work.
