Mr McCainDVD-R: need expert opinion!
by on Dec 10, 2002 at 6:47:21 pm

Greetings DVD experts! I am a video professional who recently got into DVD, and admittedly I have a lot to learn. The biggest problem I have encountered so far is that many people are purchasing DVD players that dont support DVD-R. DVD-R is so very important to our business, becuase we specialize in programs that will typically by under 1000 copies which makes stamping impossible. So I decided I would try to educate the public, and posted a notice on a popular consumer bullitien board. In the post I mentioned that the manufacutres should be repremanded for flooding the market with a product that will not support "the meduim of the near future", DVD-R. I have had several negative comments, and I would like to enlist the help of you the experts on this issue. Please respond with your thoughts.

On what basis should they be reprimanded?  Because their product does not have the feature you desire, or more specifically, the features that will work with the product that you produce?  Why should it be the other guy who has to bend his/her product to suit yours, and not vice-versa?

I don't mean to pick on you, because you have brought up a good point and I now feel better educated and since I'm planning to buy a DVD player soon, I appreciate the information.  But geeze, should I complain because my CD player can't play my vinyl records?   It's the same issue; the technology (of a CD player) doesn't support the medium (vinyl).
