Graeme, no matter who is behind the camera, lens selection will always play an important role in the look of a scene.
As in my response to your posting "Do we really need a director"
where you replied, " Story boards aid with the coverage. Not the feel.",
I have to strongly disagree.
Having a shot list aids with the coverage and continuity of the film.
Going over story boards in pre-production is your first glimpse into that scene.
That is when you should first discuss the overall mood, the lighting, the feel of the scene, so the DP can test glass for each blocking, select proper film stocks to help convey the mood, and work out lighting considerations.
That way the DP and the director are on the same page from the start.
So you have a better understanding whether an SL21 21mm T1.9 shooting from 6" or an SL150 150mm T1.9 shooting from 4' would be a better choice to help deliver the feel of the shot.

Now lets just hope that this does not double post! ;)
