On your sync question, don't be suprised if you get a little drift. Normally camera sync motors run at or - 2 or 3 frames every few minutes. Time code generators are accurate to 1 or 2 frames in 24 hours. The clock in many DAT recorders is usually only accurate to about 1/2% so unless you've got timecode you'll need a sync or slate at both the head and tail of each take. You'll have to at least run some tests to see if everything works in sync.
