Absolutely. In fact, I like to keep the back light low...around ear level. I find the old hollywood "hair light" to be very contrived and artificial. A soft 3/4 back gives a subtly three dimensional feel that I think is much more natural and attractive on men and short-haired women. (I usaully put a quarter CTO on the light, as most skin tones seem to kick the light a little on the blue side.)
Thanks for mentioning the audio bouncing off a hard card. I'll keep that in mind.
