Hi Jason,
Posting a still would be the fastest way to communicate the issue you're having.. we'd love to see it.
As for the smoothness setting -- it affects whether curves look segmented or smooth. If you're zooming way in, you may want to change the smoothness to .01.
You may also affect the "softness" by adjusting the antialiasing setting... though images that look too soft on your computer monitor actually work quite well on television. If they're too sharp, the images may vibrate on tv.
