Why upgrade past 8.2?

Sorry if I am out of the loop, but I haven't been using my Media 100 for quite a while.
I am under the impression that running anything higher then Media 100i ver 8.2 on OS X 10.3 will result in the inability to work in lossless. Is this true and can someone clarify?
If so, why is this still the case?
I have:
Media 100i/xr Ver. 8.2
P6000 lossless capable
SDI Option
The Media 100 is running OS X 10.2.8 on an older G4 867 MHz w/ 1.25GB ram
Is there any benefit whatsoever to upgrading my OS and/or Media 100 software. I have let my platinum + support lapse. I am about to start a large project on the M100 which involves using a whole bunch of legacy lossless media. But it would be nice to take advantage of any software fixes, tweaks and increased stability (if any of this has been added).
Thanks for any thoughts.
