It only happens at the end of the show as a particulary nasty way of getting under your skin.
Here's some stuff on the subject I found in my personal archives:
The first thing you should try is an update to QuickTime 4.1.2 and Mac
OS9.0.4. That could explain the system problems without M100 running.
Also update to the latest M100 which I think for your machine is 6.0.2
(don't quote me on that).

It has happened to me, but I am not sure exactly what I was doing when it
happened. It has happened at least one time in each of the last two
projects I have edited, and usually the transition it makes to go away is a
big long rendered Boris transition. Maybe there is a connection between
that.
