Thanks Greg -

My feeling is that by buying a Media 100i XS v. 8 (running on OSX), this august, I'll be in good shape for the work I'll be producing for at a least a few years. Even if I never get another software update from M100 in 2-3 years.

As for authoring DVD material, is there some reason that you know of that would prevent exported material from a M100 from being good source material for MPEG2 encoding? I think M100 as a NLE is fine if your plan is to author DVD's down the line. I'd be more concerned about a good authoring program, MPEG 2 encoding hardware & software, the DVD-R discs you choose, and your Burner. Compatibility from authoring to playback on a range of consumer DVD players is something to stay up-to-date with. There's a great article on that this month in DV Magazine actually.

I also own DVD studio Pro but haven't had the chance to use it yet. I'm not aware of any issues with M100 material being authored unsuccessfully through that application, is there something that I don't know about though?

Thanks,
Brian
