Momentary (1-5 sec) direct unfiltered noonday sunlight has not affected my camera's CCD. I have recorded over 10 sunrises and sunsets for 15-20 minutes, for time-lapse work, where I used ND2 and an external ND filter (factor 3-4), also without any apparent damage.

You'd probably wipe out the CCD with a prolonged exposure (you don't need to melt the silicon, only heat it up enough to ruin the semiconductor junctions, and melt the aluminum interconnects), so don't do that. A brief, less than 5 second, exposure should be tolerable.
