Also, anyone know for sure if DV is recompressed when you go back to tape via firewire from say Final Cut Pro...?

Nope. Rendering and processing in the computer re-compresses, but on export it's an identical copy. So footage that was never rendered will have NO re-compression from when it was shot and stuff that was rendered for any reason will have been recompressed once.
But you are right, SDI can offer slight improvements. Not much different to the eye, but probably a little better for chroma keying. Don't expect to really "see" a difference by switching to SDI, though.
