what exactly do the repair shops do when they clean the heads?
====
Well, to clean a VCR you wipe the heads with a special swab dipped in a special cleaning formula. It's like a q-tip but NOT fuzzy so no 'fuzz' come off of it. You also have to wipe along the direction the head spins so you don't scratch the heads.
I assume that cleaning a camera is similar. The difference is that it's several times smaller and in an area that's dificult to open. That's why I've never tried it.
