DV is a "standard" format (like VHS, DAT, BetaCam)
That being said, its also a very finicky format in regard to tracking and head-alignment.

So the short answer is "yes" a DV tape recorded on any DV camera or deck will play fine on a Sony (and vise-versa).

But this is assuming all heads involved are in perfect alignment.
For some reason, tapes recorded on Canon XL1 cameras have had more playback "hiccups" than most (regardless of which brand you chose to play them on.)

Also, even if the Sony camcorder or deck is not designated as a DVCAM unit, virtually ALL of them will PLAY this format perfectly (even the little home-video camcorders... EXCEPT for the VX1000!)
Likewise, Panasonic will play DVCAM. But Canon, Sharp and many others will NOT.
But they will all play a miniDV recorded on a Sony.

They should be used for entertainment purposes only.
Think of him as a "seer" on a Psychic Production Network.
