Are you speaking of a wireless microphone system? Lav, or lavaliere, is generally used to refer to a lapel type microphone.
For durability, look at the connectors. The low cost wireless systems often use a hard wired microphone. If you have a problem with the mic then you have to have the whole transmitter sent to repair rather than switch to a back up mic. You also might want to have different mics for different applications plugged into your transmitter.
