MZLow-budget boom miking for Canon XL1
by on Jun 19, 2002 at 6:56:45 am

I'm about to hit the streets and price out some equipment I need for a feature DV project I'm pulling together and need audio professional advice before I commit to anything.

Here's the set-up I've considered so far, and it's within my price range. Talk me out of it, with something better and/or cheaper for my situation:

**For the mic, the Audix UEM-81s.
**For the shockmount, either of the two Audio-Technica $50 mounts (don't have model #'s right now)
**For the boompole, any pole will do :)
**For the connection to the XL1, the Shure A96F (line matching transformer from XLR to 1/8" stereo minijack)

That's what I'm intending to price out. I know in another forum DSE hipped me to the Audix (I finally brought this out of the Vegas forum!). There's also the Audio Technica AT815 or 835, though they are a bit more expensive. I know, you get what you pay for. Are these mics good for overhead boom miking? What is the optimum distance from the subject? Are they durable and reliable? Are there any other mics in the sub-$300 range I should be looking at. I've already been talked out of Azden's SGM-2x.

Thanks for your assistance.
Mark
