turning video effects on and off with keyframes in PPro 1.5

When you apply a video effect in PPro 1.5 such as the "invert" effect to make it look like a negative--how do you turn the effect on and off with keyframes? Seems that once you apply the effect, it's "on" for the duration of the clip and I'm not clear how to gradate it or turn it on and off at certain points in the clip. Any help appreciated.
