I would echo Bob's comments on this.

Avid and Discreet, even Media 100 have created some very good systems over the years. However Avid's recent price incentives (MC 9000's for as low as $ 68,000.00 US) show that Avid is attempting to start discounting it's products to maintain some marketshare.

The huge edge Avid has is widespread familiarity of their interface. As hardware becomes less and less an issue, this is the ace in the hole they should be really pushing, and I think the popularity of the Express systems are a good indication that they are moving that way.

In the end the editor is the factor that will matter most, but even a good editor trying to pay for Media Composer overhead in a Final Cut Pro economy could potentially suffer.

It's not the machine that makes the edit, but the loan you took out to buy it can make it difficult to compete in some cases.
