Notwithstanding the recent press releases, we've been
really happy with our 844Xe. Our biggest problems with
it right now are the lack of real audio tools (although
it does have embedded OMF export and import) and some
things we would like to see with 3:2 pulldown. Word
on the street is the next point release will address
both of these to some degree.
Despite the problems it has, it is REALLY nice to be
able to do a 10 second, 8 or 9 layer composite with
full animated alpha channels for several layers and
photoshop-style transfer modes and only have to wait
to watch it build 4-layer groups in real time. We
did one of these in a program recently and, at 9
layers, the "processing" (remember, with 844 you don't
'render') for the 10 second comp was 20 seconds - 1
pass for each 4 layers at real time. And all at 10-bit
uncompressed.
Depending on the type of editing you do and how your
workflow is set up it may not be the best. We do
mostly 30-second commercials with clients watching
the edit and, for us, it's great.
If you have any specific questions about it, I would
be happy to answer what I can.
Good luck.
