The ACE (american cinema editors) used to run a competition where they would send you raw footage from a recient show and you would edit it and submit it for the competition. You might check their web site. (sorry, don't know the address, but you can google it.)

There is also the famous "gunsmoke" scene that several film schools use, but I am not sure where they got it.
