[Kristen Maxwell] "Also, I have yet to figure out a good way to get across the important factors of what I consider to be a good editing job without taking too long (i.e. establing a visual style, pacing, etc). Have you guys ever run into the same dilemma? Any ideas on how to work around it? You mentioned perhaps doing multiple reels or segments, and I think I will most likely go that route... perhaps with a few shortened "case study" style clips... i dunno? "

Kristen -

If you decide on two reels (which might be a good options for you as you may be looking for strictly editorial or motion graphics work) certainly it makes things much easier - but you may want to break it down even further - depending on whether you're looking to edit spots, promos, docum, etc - when I'm looking at editors their reel gets my interest - but I then want to see one or two programs in their entirety to really get a feel for the style and type of work they've done.

If you want to go with a single reel you have an interesting start - what you need to do is approach your reel like a storytelling job - what do you want to say about yourself - mix your graphics with live, it can make transitions of mood, etc, and set a tone without being the driving force behind the piece. For example you might try doing something like using ECU live "expressions" (mouths, hands, eyes, etc)or short sequences thereof as transitions between the graphics segments, to express emotion, to say something about yourself, etc - with the use of the right piece (or pieces) of music this could easily give the piece more of an "edited" look rather than just a compilation of segments??

Short on sleep at the moment so if this makes no sense, I understand - just a thought FWIW.

slainte,
marisu

PS - Where are you located, and what kind of work do you really want?
