DaVjMasked area emitter - but HOW?

I am trying to create a masked area emitter in PIllusion 3 but I am obviously doing something wrong here. i set the shape properties to Area but i do not get the "mask emitter with images" option like i see in the 3.0 manual.
Could anyone point out the right steps to take to me?
