I personally use FCP with a Pinacle Cine' Wave card $5,300.00 ( it also has a choice of three different off-line resolutions included, 75% almost looks film-like) Pinacle also gives you Commotion Pro ( thier vrsion of Adobe After Effects) for FREE its great motion effects and compositing software rivaling After Effects, it previews through the Cine Wave card so you can see what you doing right on your NTSC monitor from Commotion Pro, Break Out Box (BOB) $950.00 to capture YUC, Y/C, or composite video I/O , and balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) audio I/O, it looks great, of course uncompressed. I use both DV and Beta SP formats, I use a Sony DSR-40 to capture DV from the anolog component outputs ( not FW ) If captured through FW Final Cut has to Up-Convert the DV to uncompressed this has to be rendered and does'nt even look as good as the original DV footage. Pinacle has just announced thier Real Time software only up-grade for the Cine' Wave, about 2,500.00 you can also up-grade to HD for only about $2000.00. I do not have the realtime up-grade yet. I use a Dual 800 G4, it takes between 4 and 5 seconds to render a 30 frame dissolve and a 5 second clip slowed to 50% speed takes between 22 -25 seconds to render ( not too bad ). I capture to 4 x 73 GB (270 GB) Cheetah drives ATTO RAID. $3,900.00. Using a ATTO PCI-UL3D SCSI control card $65.00, striping software $480.00.
I have had very little problems with this system, I highly recomend it. I hope this helps you Will, regards Jim
