SVHS ET (I have a deck in front of me) will record a SVHS-like signal on a standard VHS tape, if the ET button is pushed, switching the vcr into ET mode. BUT...the ET tapes will only play back in an ET-equipped deck, or I suppose on a standard SVHS machine.
Put an ET tape in a regular VHS machine, and not really a watchable tape. Basically, it allows people to record at higher quality on standard VHS tapes, when playback will be on the same machine. Very good for recording movies off pay-per-view at home, just don't loan the tapes to your uncle Bob, because he'll be upset when he can't watch anything.
