We have and use an S-VHS ET deck at the station to do exactly what you described and have no problems with it.
The only catch i've seen with it so far is if someone decides to put it in EP mode. A regular VHS deck can't handle EP mode and plays the tape back at double speed, but in standard play mode no glitches at all.
I had a LOONG heart to heart with the fool that switched the deck to EP mode :)
