Re: drawbacks of using TV instead of NTSC monitor

A good broadcast monitor (such as the one I just posted for sale) is made with the best components to maintain the highest quality. The parts use tight tolerances. They are made to be on 24 hours a day and not drift. They are used as a reference to judge your signal for quality. Resolutions are high. Homw TV's are made wth lower tolerance components that cost less money and will drift over time. So what you see one day may not be correct and you may make adjustments in the wrong direction on your signal. The monitor I posted cost $4000 new and another $2800 to have a new tube installed. I also had a Sony 19" that cost me $8000 new. We all know what consumer TV's cost. I am selling it becuase I am retired and I sold everything else I had in my studio and made a very good living with it. It just sits here and I am happy to get a little for it and help someone out.

Consumer TV's have gotten better in quality. They have higher resolutions now. But the stability of of a broadcast monitor is used for serious video work. Also, the broadcast monitor has two drawers full of controls to tweak the picture display very precisely. After it is set, you do not have to worry. Home TV's have 4 or 5 contols we are all familiar with. Any fine tuning on a home TV requires a tech to go inside and even then there are fewer controls. This is important for registration of the tube.
