There is no such thing as "easy grain memoval" with really poorly shot Hi8 video. However, one of the tricks some use to clear up grain is:

1. duplicate the layer

2. add a very small 2-3 blur to the top layer

3. use a overlay transfer mode

If this doesn't offer the results that you want, try to utilize the the same steps above on a third layer with the additional effect of dumping the saturation on the middle layer to 0 and amplifying the contrast just a bit. For this middle layer, you should use the multiply transfer mode, while the top layer will still use the overlay transfer mode. Both duplicated layers will have a mild blur and each will add subtle differences to the resulting image.

This style adds a little more definition to the hard edges in the original image and attempts to disguise the grain while the first one focuses on lightening the video to better define your subject or image without additional edge contrast.

Good luck,
Michael
