Thanks for the useful tips. I was able to get a good result by adding noise to a new ROUGHNESS channel and tweaking the settings. It blended the values across the single color that was merging with the black background. Even with 24 bit dithering checked, banding occcured before adding noise. I also solved the problem in another way by adding 3 or 4 units of noise to the rendered Cinema image in PhotoShop CS. I still will play with combining slightly different colors in the spectral channels, but adding noise, I believe, was the key factor in eliminating the banding.
