Karl NewmanVERY Newbie-Pasting paths

I can not seem to figure out how to paste an Illustrator file into C4D. The only thing I find in the book is the load object but when I click that it opens a finder window, lets me search to the file, then when I select the file the finder window closes and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? (Mac OSX 10.3 with C4D 8.5 and Ill 9.02)
