OSX-friendly plugins will have this type of file in the folder:

pluginname.xdl

.mdl and .cdl are for windows and mac OS.

If there is no .xdl file in the archive, then the C++ plugin will not work under OSX.

Of course a recompile may be all that is necessary, but if the developer doesn't have OSX (or an OSX compiler) then you will have to use Mac OS classic (or OS9, 8.6, etc.)
