You won't have to relearn too much. The interface has changed somewhat (for the better), but it's stuff that you can pick up pretty quickly. The more complicated things, like Thinking Particles and Mocca, are straight additions.

R8 can open files created in R6, but not the other way around.

There are lots of plugins that work in versions 6+, but some of the newer plugins require R8.
