well if I'm not mistaken (and I wouldnt be surprised if I was, being the C4D newb I am) technically in the first example the caps and the cylinder are already part of the same object but just with seperate surfaces that need to be welded or optimized to become one surface...The second example shows just what connect does, making one object out of two, this doesnt mean it merges the new object for you into one surface, you will still have to weld or optimize the points yourself if you want the cubes to move together but that doesnt mean they are not one object, if they where two objects you couldnt even weld points from the two different cubes because when you'd select one cube you couldnt acces the points from the other cube at the same time....
