I don't use Shake, but I think it's inaccurate to say it's more like AE than Motion. Shake's main use is for compositing, not motion graphics/animation. Correct me if I'm wrong.

But it really depends on what you need when you talk about which application does something faster/easier.

BTW, did you guys hear Boris Continuum 3 is being updated for Motion and is due out this month? That will add 3D to Motion. Apple's plug-ins page has been updated for Motion and there are a few listed now.
