Yes you are right, it is about the codecs! I did not see any other product that could do 3 streams of true 1920x1080 video with 4 layers of DVEed graphics, software only on 2 striped IDE drives. with HD-SDI in and out. I sat at the machine and did it myself. (I tried to break it) HDV video uses the same codec in this system.

In a machine with 9 hours of storage for under $10K.

That is why I think it is cool technology!
