I would buy the Shake 3 book. It has a 30 day trial version of shake 3 and you can make the decision yourself whether it will be worth forking out $3000 for shake (which by the way was $5000 up until NAB2004 last year).

Also, unless you have an IMMEDIATE need for version 3.5 I would suggest you wait to see what is announced at NAB2005 in April. It is probably a slam dunk that version 4 will be announced at NAB. I'm not sure what any upgrade cost from 3.5 would be. It could pay to wait depending on your situation.

The 30 day trial from the book will get you within a month of NAB's announcements. FYI
