I'd recommend buying a VCR with a TBC. Most JVC SVHS vcrs have TBCs and can be found for $100-300 USD. I have over 800 hours on a S5902U with out one problem. Also for $1000 usd you can get a JVC Svhs with DV. Now the DV side is of the same quality as a camcorder, but the deck lets you dump VHS to firewire and back without a DV intermediary. I have a DVS2 with 400 HRs on it at my offline station, and having the ability to just hit record from firewire output to get client approval is a huge time saver.
