I think someone who has this exact same setup should try out what the man is saying and see if it outputs to tape at full quality without render.
Obviously Craig has tons of this kind of thing to do and wouldn't want to render.
Also even if it isn't RT, why not do this for a 1 min piece and render and see how much time it takes.

And for this thing you may want to look at a Apple XRaid instead of a SCSI RAID.
