Small correction:
"As far as I know, the Igniter studio can't have better or worse M-JPEG than others, because it uses the same standard Quicktime codec."
The Igniter has dedicated hardware for doing MJPEG compression which uses a custom Aurora MJPEG codec. WIth this codec you can vary the data rate from 500k/sec up to 13.5MB/sec. You also don't get any luma shifting becuase the codec works in the 4:2:2 YUV color space. You also get all the RT effects that Auora's card natively provides. However, you can't use Apples RT Extreme RT capabilites, only the native Aurora RT effects.
PhotoJPEG is very processor intensive to capture. You need a fast machine to achieve this without dropping frames. However, any dual machine purchased in the last year (or a G5) should have no problem at all with this.
