It was dropping a LOT of frames...so many I didn't want to count. You are correct in saying that it SHOULD work. AJA still won't support use of the I/o with any Powerbook. There's got to be a technical explanation for this, but no one seems to have that information on paper. I wish they did so people like you and I wouldn't have to figure it out on our own.
